HOOPSTER: STOREY'S STORY
by Henry Liao for philippinebasketball.ph (03/22/2010)

There was this popular song during the sixties which begins with the following line: “I’m a travelling man, made a lot of stops, all over the world.”

The statement fittingly describes the professional basketball travails of Barangay Ginebra’s 32-year-old American import Awvee Storey.

The lone foreign player with legitimate National Basketball Association (NBA) experience suiting up in the ongoing Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) Fiesta Cup competitions, the 6-6 Storey has been in and out of five continents (North America, South America, Asia, Europe and Oceania) in search for roundball employment.

At best, Storey has had a colorful pro basketball odyssey after matriculating at Proviso West (Maywood, Illinois) and New Hampton Prep (New Hampshire) in high school and University of Illinois and Arizona State University in college.

Bypassed in the 2002 NBA draft, Storey played in South Korea in 2002-03. The following campaign, he split time in Korea and Venezuela, the latter of which he posted averages of 18.6 points and 6.8 rebounds in eight games with Carabobo.

Storey returned to the States when the New Jersey Nets inked him to a free-agent deal at the start of the 2004-05 wars. He appeared in nine games with the Nets before getting the pink slip. Subsequently, Storey hooked up with the Idaho Stampede in the Continental Basketball Association then was back in Korea to wear the colors of Wonju TG Sambo Xers.

A native of Chicago, Storey was back in the U.S. and the NBA in 2005-06, playing in 25 games with the Washington Wizards and hitting at a 1.7-point clip.

Following an unsuccessful tryout with the Nets in October 2006, Storey stayed close to home to toil with the Dakota Wizards in the NBA Development League.

His Wizards stint, however, lasted for only three contests (9.3 ppg, 6.0 rpg) as the league suspended Storey after he punched teammate Martynas Andriuskevicius in the head during practice. (Andriuskevicius, a Lithuanian who performed with the Cleveland Cavaliers in 2005-06, suffered a fractured skull.)

Probably in need of easy greenbucks, the tough-as-nail Storey completed his 2006-07 campaign in Germany, landing a job with the Braunschweig club and averaging 10.8 scores and 4.6 boards in 16 appearances.

Storey rejoined the NBA in 2007-08 and registered a 3.5-point clip in 26 assignments with the Milwaukee Bucks.

After failing to earn a free-agent NBA job with New Jersey in October 2008, Storey moved back to the Asian circuit and suited up for Liaoning in the Chinese Basketball Association during the 2008-09 wars. He posted averages of 23.3 points and 7.1 rebounds in 44 games with Liaoning.

Before his acquisition by Barangay Ginebra, Storey, who averaged 2.4 and 1.4 rebounds in 60 total games during his three-year NBA tenure, saw action with the New Zealand Breakers in Australia’s National Basketball League at the start of the 2009-10 season.

In his debut with the Gin Kings last Sunday, Storey collected 33 points and 16 reebies as Barangay Ginebra triumphed over Talk ‘N Text, 97-90.
