XAVIER SCHOOL 119 – ST. STEPHEN’S HS 56
Notes: Xavier School phenom Jeron Teng was virtually a one-man team,
collecting his career second-best output of 58 points in outscoring
the entire St. Stephen’s HS team …
The 6-1 Teng made 25 of his 50 attempts from the field, including 20-for-37
from the two-point area, and shot 3-for-4 from the charity stripes.
He also plucked down 12 rebounds, dished off three assists and stole
the rock twice in 37 minutes of service …
Xavier School got off to an 11-0 start, eight of by Teng, and never
looked back. The Golden Stallions jumped to a 40-9 lead after the first
10 minutes, then stretched it to 44-9 when the Stephenians hit seven
straight points, including a trifecta and a twinner from Nikki Co, to
slice their deficit to 30, 46-16 …
The steamroller that is the Gold and Blue was unstoppable as XS stormed
to a 62-22 halftime lead behind Teng’s 31-point effort (on 13-for-26
field shooting) – six more than the total score of SSHS for the whole
40-minute contest – and took an 85-42 point advantage as Teng reach
the 40-point mark …
XS scored the game’s final 10 points, seven of them by Jeron …
Paolo Cabero was three steals short of a triple-double with 13 points
(on 6-for-10 from the field), 13 assists and seven steals in 25 minutes
for the Golden Stallions …
The third XS double-digit scorer was Jarrell Lim with 10 markers in
13 minutes. Kyles Lao and Marco Ayuste had eight points each for the
winners, who will take on Uno High School on Jan. 21 in their fourth
straight game in as many TL playdates …
Juniors rookie Pierre Chan knocked in 19 points and pulled down 12 boards
in 32 minutes for Stephen’s HS. Pint-sized guard Kevin Ng contributed
a dozen markers for the losers.
CHIANG KAI SHEK COLLEGE 91 – GRACE CHRISTIAN COLLEGE
40
Notes: Much-improved frontliner John Kevin Baytan, he with the fancy
moves and acrobatic fakes, scored CKSC’s first seven points, including
a three that gave the Blue Dragons their first lead, 7-6. Grace Christian
College was still within striking distance, trailing by just two points,
13-11, midway through the first quarter when CKSC went on a 25-2 spree
bridging the first and second quarters on runs of 12-0 and 13-0 to break
the game wide open, 38-13 …
Coach Goldwin Monteverde’s charges were ahead 45-17 at the end of the
opening half …
CKSC was never challenged at any time in the second half, enjoying a
71-23 advantage entering the fourth period. It held GCC to a measly
six points each in the second and third quarters …
Baytan topscored for CKSC with 19 points in just 21 minutes, shooting
6-for-7 from the two-point area and 2-for-3 from the bonus-point territory.
Carlo Young contributed 13 points and dished off four assists. Man-mountain
rookie Wilson Bartolome had 11 scores, nine boards and four block shots.
Kimlee Bayquin also grabbed nine reebies …
Bespectacled center Kevin Lao topped GCC with 12 points and eight rebounds
…
Lanz Tan was the only other GCC player in double figures with 10 points.
Jan Aaron Choa had nine rebounds. Rodney Gonzales, who grabbed 20 rebounds
in his first game with Grace, was unable to play because he brought
a wrong uniform …
Former GCC player and current assistant coach Angelo So (the elder brother
of former hotshot Christian So) called the shots from the bench for
his alma mater …
Lito Vergara, the GCC Aspirants head coach, will be coaching the Juniors
team as well in Grace’s next game on Jan. 24 against SSHS at the Uno
HS Gym. Vergara piloted Xavier School to the TL Juniors championship
in 2008 and 2009.
