XAVIER SCHOOL 131 ? GRACE CHRISTIAN COLLEGE 62
Notes: Host Grace Christian College, which dropped all its seven assignments this season, scored the game?s first four points (on twinners by Rodney Gonzales and Kevin Lao) but Xavier School went on a 14-0 run (eight by Jeron Teng, four by Jarrell Lim and two by Paolo Cabero) to snatch a 14-6 advantage that GCC was unable to overcome from. Mammoth center Isaac Go, who missed XS?s previous two games, struck inside to give the Golden Stallions a 21-11 edge at the end of the first quarter ?
Xavier School led by at least 10 points for the rest of the game, taking the half, 52-30; the third quarter, 86-49; and the game, 131-62. XS outscored GCC, 45-13, in the fourth quarter, and registered 35 of the game?s final 41 points (from 96-56) ?
Teng got his pedestrian 35 points (on 14-for-29 FG and 7-for-8 FT shooting clips) and had eight rebounds, four assists and two steals in 31 minutes for the Golden Stallions, who will meet Chiang Kai Shek College in a semifinals encounter armed with a twice-to-beat incentive. Cabero chalked up a Tiong Lian career-high 26 points (17 of them coming in the final quarter) and also contributed five boards ands four assists ?
Kyles Lao, who along with Go suited up for the PH national squad that placed fourth in the 2011 FIBA Asia Under-16 tournament, came in with only four minutes remaining in the second quarter (and the score 42-22) and immediately punctured the hoops with a basket. Lao and five other HS juniors came in late after attending a school activity that took them to Bataan. Still and all, Lao totaled 23 points, including 21 in the second half. He also contributed six reebies, eight assists and four steals in just 17 minutes ?
Xavier School had its fourth 20-point scorer in Jarrell Lim, who notched 21 markers, 14 of them coming in the first 20 minutes. He also had a triple 5 in rebounds, assists and steals. Go finished with eight points, eight boards and two blocks in 14 minutes following a two-game sabbatical due to a shoulder injury ?
Bespectacled Kevin Lao completed his final year of Tiong Lian eligibility with 11 points, six rebounds and three assists for Grace Christian College, which also got a double-double from Rodney Gonzales, who wound up with 11 scores and 12 rebounds ?
Xavier School started the game with only nine players. For the first time this season, it showed up with a cheering squad ? two students with drums ?
Dr. James L. Tan, the president of host Grace Christian College, was in attendance.
