A walk in the park it was for defending champion Xavier School as the Golden Stallions romped away with a 94-46 decision over St. Stephen’s High School in the Division II (Juniors Division) finals of the 14th Chiang San Ching Memorial Cup (Kiao Ching) basketball tournament held at the Fr. Cortina Sports Center (Inside the Xavier School campus) last June 1.
Xavier School never trailed throughout the game, starting each half with a Jeron Teng three.
SSHS also opened with a trifecta for a 3-3 deadlock before 14 straight points by the Golden Stallions put them ahead, 17-3, and buried the Stephenians for good.
The first quarter end with XS up by 15 points, 31-16. Halftime score was 45-23. It was 69-33 after three quarters.
Teng was utilized for barely 20 minutes yet he wound up with a team-best 18 points (four threes) on 7-for-15 field-goal shooting while also collecting six rebounds and a pair of assists.
Martin Tioseco was the only other Xaverian in double digits with 12 markers. Henry Yap, son of former SSHS and PBA hotshot Kenneth Yap, contributed eight points, and Paolo Cabero and Francis Yao each had seven.
Fifteen of the 16 men fielded in by Xavier head coach Budds Reyes scored at least two points.
Pint-sized guard Kevin Ng led St. Stephen’s HS with 12 points.
In the third-place game, power forward-turned wingman Richard Sy scored all eight points (a three-point shot, a three-point play and a follow-up) by St. Jude Catholic School in the final two minutes in leading his school to an 8-2 wind-up and a 73-68 victory.
