Before going up to the ring, probably against Floyd
Mayweather, Jr., boxing icon Manny Pacquiao will show off his basketball
stuff when his PacMan Gen-San Warriors play host to the second leg
of the Tournament of the Philippines starting today at the Lagao
gym in Gen. Santos City.
Three more teams, including Pacquiao’s Warriors make
their debut in the joint venture of the Philippine Basketball League
(PBL) and Liga Pilipinas. The other two are Cobra Energy Drink and
Misamis Oriental Meteors.
Pacquiao is reportedly enrolled at the Development
Academy of the Philippines (DAP) in Ortigas but he’s listed in the
roster of the Warriors, according to PBL's Butch Maniego.
He will wear jersey No. 17 once he plays for his
team.
The fourth team in the leg sponsored by Air21, Ascof
Lagundi, Molten, Agrinurture, Treston College, Burlington and Basketball
TV is Treston-Laguna, which finished third in the initial leg won
by M. Lhuillier-Cebu last Saturday.
The Warriors battle the Stallions in the main game
at 7:30 p.m. after the Ironmen and the Meteors collide in the curtain
raiser at 5 p.m.
Pacquiao, who is coming off a trip to the United
States after receiving his Boxer of the Decade award from the Boxing
Writers Association of America, will be backstopped by PBL standout
Marvin Yambao and center Erian Daja.
Laguna, which gained seven points in the previous
leg, will lean on Rob Sanz, Leomer Losentes, Alex Angeles, Marlon
Legaspi and Francis Mercado.
Meanwhile, Cobra has enlisted five former players
from University of the East in UAAP Mythical Five member Elmer Espiritu,
Pari Llagas, Rudy Lingganay, Val Acuna and Jorel Canizares.
Three of them are coming off a stint in the ASEAN
Basketball League with Espiritu and Acuna joining the champion Philippine
Patriots and Lingganay having a strong year for the KL Dragons.
