GENERAL SANTOS CITY — Boxing icon Manny Pacquiao buried a triple as huge as his whistling left in the third period but it failed to stop Cobra Energy Drink from clinching the first finals berth in the second leg of the Tournament of the Philippines.
While fans came in droves to watch Pacquiao, it was Elmer Espiritu who shone brightest as he came through with clutch baskets in the payoff period as the Ironmen outlasted the MP Pacman Gensan Warriors, 83-79, Thursday at the Lagao gym here.
It was the second straight win for the Ironmen, who also got significant numbers from burly forward Pari Llagas in the fourth to hand Pacquiao’s team its first loss in the tournament jointly organized by Philippine Basketball League (PBL) and Liga Pilipinas.
Misamis Oriental of Gov. Oscar Moreno, meantime, bounced back from a stinging defeat to Cobra the other day by downing Treston-Laguna, 86-79.
Gensan and Misamis Oriental are disputing the second finals berth at presstime.
"Mahirap talagang maglaro against a home team, talagang di bibitaw yan. Luckily, we were able to snatch this win," said Cobra coach Lawrence Chongson.
For a while, Cobra appeared headed for a breezy win when they took a 62-51 lead but the host squad rallied to close within 79-81 on another triple by Erian Daja with 1:44 left.
But Llagas ended Gensan’s bid as he scored on a power play that sparked another onslaught. Llagas delivered 10 points in the final canto to finish with a game-high 19 points and seven rebounds while Espiritu had an all-around effort with 14 points, eight rebounds, five blocks and four assists.
After his 2-of-12 shooting in the team’s 73-69 win over Laguna, Pacquiao finished with 1-of-7 this time. But his lone basket sent the crowd into frenzied celebration, including his wife, Jinky.
Former UAAP scoring champion Patrick Cabahug led Mis. Or with 19 points while Neil Raneses and Dino Daa chipped in 13 and 13, respectively.
