Misamis Oriental easily dispatched ANI-FCA, 96-72, but it was Manny Pacquiao’s MP Pacman Gensan which scored the biggest win at the start of the fourth leg of the Tournament of the Philippines (TOP) Tuesday at the Mandaue City Cultural and Sports Center.
The Gensan Warriors broke the hearts of the local fans by scoring a thrilling 68-65 win over the Mandaue Landmasters in the second game of the tournament jointly organized by the Philippine Basketball League (PBL) and Liga Pilipinas.
Though Pacquiao did not show up in the game, the Gensan Warriors rallied from a 14-point deficit in the second period to post their biggest win so far – thanks largely to the heroics of Louie Medalla.
Misamis and Gensan could forge a title showdown if they beat their rivals Wednesday. Misamis is playing against the host squad while Gensan is battling ANI-FCA at presstime.
Despite their miserable shooting from the free throw area – making only six of 26 tries – the Gensan Warriors leaned heavily on their defense to frustrate the host squad which was held to just eight points in the payoff period while exploding for 22 points.
"I just told them to keep on trying hard. This is a big win because it came against the home team," said Gensan coach Fean Del Rosario.
Veteran forward Neil Raneses led the well-balanced attack of Misamis of coach Jun Noel with 18 points on 6-of-10 shooting from their field.
Five other Misamis players, including former UAAP scoring champion Patrick Cabahug, scored in double figures as they dominated the match from the start en route to posting one of the lopsided wins in the tournament sponsored by Air21, Molten, Ascof Lagundi, Agrinurture, Treston College, Burlington and Basketball TV.
Cabahug finished with 17 points on a brilliant 3-of-4 shooting from beyond the arc.
"We're off to a good start but what I liked about our game was we never collapsed. I saw in the players their killer's instinct as they never let their guards down despite racing to a big lead," said Noel.
The loss was ANI-FCA’s fifth straight and 12th overall counting its dismal 0-7 record in the PBL last March.
From a 32-30 slim advantage, the Meteors dropped a 12-4 run to move up by 10 at halftime, 44-34.
