ANI-FCA faces Mis. Oriental in finals (07/02/2010)
MANDAUE CITY — Having whetted its winning appetite, ANI-FCA went on to claim the second finals berths by downing the host team, 74-65, in the Tournament of the Philippines (TOP) Thursday at the Mandaue City Cultural and Sports Center here.
Former Ateneo star Ford Arao came through with another solid performance, posting 16 points and 11 rebounds as ANI-FCA notched its second straight win and arranged a title duel with in-form Misamis Oriental.
The Misamis Meteors of coach Jun Noel completed a three-game sweep of the elims with a 99-73 rout of Manny Pacquiao’s MP Pacman Gensan in the event serving as the fourth leg of the tournament jointly organized by the Philippine Basketball League (PBL) and Liga Pilipinas.
The Cultivators trailed for most of the way but came alive in the payoff period as Arao joined hands with former pro Boyet Bautista and the burly Roel Hugnatan in a decisive run to finally turn things around in their favor to finish the elims with a 2-1 card.
"We're slowly showing maturity in our game," said Cultivators coach Arsenio Dysanco.
The Meteors of Gov. Oscar Moreno and the Cultivators are contesting the championship at presstime.
Arao sparked the team's rally as he unloaded 11 points in a 20-12 blast as the Cultivators closed in by two, 56-54, before Bautista and Hugnatan took over.
The 5-foot-7 Bautista orchestrated the team’s plays very well with Hugnatan the recipient of his nifty passes. Hugnatan also finished with 16 markers while Bautista tallied nine points, five assists, three rebounds and a steal.
"Every game is a learning process for us. We still have a lot of things to learn as a team and being in the finals, we hope to gain more experience since we will be up against a much veteran team," added Dysanco whose team took a 72-96 beating from the Meteors last Tuesday.
Neil Raneses Patrick Cabahug and Ronald Lamocha combined for 41 points while bigmen Mark Andaya and Philip Butel each had four blocks to exemplify MisOr's domination against the Warriors.
"We have accomplished our first goal and now we set our sight on achieving our next target that is to win the title," said coach Jun Noel who's team gained additional two points.
