12 noon — Cobra vs MP Gensan (3rd Place)
2 p.m. —Taguig vs Ascof Lagundi (Finals)
Ascof Lagundi outsteadied MP Pacman Gensan in overtime,
94-90, to clinch the second finals berth in the fifth leg of the
Tournament of the Philippines (TOP) yesterday at the Emilio Aguinaldo
College gym in Manila.
Veteran point guard Rob Labagala shattered an 87-all
count with about a minute left in the extra five-minute period then
intercepted a weak pass by the Warriors' Louie Medalla to seal a
title showdown with Taguig in the event jointly organized by the
Philippine Basketball League (PBL) and Liga Pilipinas.
Labagala, who had 15 points, eight rebounds, five
assists and four assists, also set up the tying basket that forced
an overtime when he dished off Bam Gamalinda with five seconds remaining
for a 79-all deadlock.
"He's (Labagala) been steady for us. He's giving
us a big lift on both ends of the floor," said coach Carlo
Tan, whose squad battles Taguig for the leg crown at 2 p.m. today.
"We hope our tired legs get plenty of rest in
time for our game tomorrow (today)," Tan added.
Gamalinda led the Cough Busters with 23 points while
Raymund Aguilar added 15 points, eight rebounds and five assists
in the victory.
Jonathan Parreno fired a game-high 28 points on five
treys while John Gonzaga finished with 11 points but Gensan, which
came back from an 11-point third quarter deficit, failed to protect
a 67-60 lead with 6:44 left in regulation.
In the first game, Cobra Energy Drink ruined the
sweep bid of early finalist Taguig by hacking out an 83-74 win.
The Ironmen teetered on the brink of collapse after
leading most of the way but former La Salle star Peejay Barua rose
to the occasion, firing 13 points in the payoff period to help Asia
Brewery franchise repel Taguig’s fightback.
The win enabled Cobra to end a six-game losing streak
dating back to the start of the Laguna leg held two weeks ago.
