ML Kwarta Padala-Cebu stretched its amazing run to 29 to rule the
sixth leg of the Tournament of the Philippines (TOP) Friday at the
New Cebu Coliseum.
Former pro Bruce Dacia put on another dazzling performance
to help power Cebu to a 78-70 win over bitter-rival Misamis Oriental
and claim their second leg crown in the event jointly organized
by Philippine Basketball League and Liga Pilipinas.
“I told my players that we can lose a game but not
in our home court. This is some sort of a payback because Misamis
embarrassed us here for the second conference title of the Liga
Pilipinas,” said a jubilant coach Raul “Yayoy” Alcoseba.
After losing to Misamis, the Niños won 21 straight
games to rule the Third Conference of Liga Pilipinas last year.
Mandaue, meanwhile, got back at Taguig, 106-99, to
claim third place.
While Cebu showed steely resolve in the payoff period,
Misamis showed none of it as the Meteors turned the ball one after
another to the chagrin of coach Jun Noel.
That enabled the Niños to shatter a 67-61 lead which
they stubbornly protected to earn another 15 points that put them
on top of the standings with 30 points.
Also shining for the Niños, who also swept in the
opening leg in Manila, were veteran guard Warren Ybanez and Mark
Magsumbol who came through with clutch plays that kept the Meteors
of Misamis Oriental Gov. Oscar Moreno at bay.
Ybanez finished with 12 points, seven rebounds, five
steals and an assist.
Mark Andaya took the scoring cudgels for the Meteors
as the team’s top guns Neil Ranese and former UAAP scoring champion
Patrick Cabahug struggled offensively in the face of Cebu’s sticky
defense.
Andaya finished with 12 points while Raneses and
Cabahug just combined for 14 points.
