Games Today (Cong. Jun Duenas Gym, Taguig City) 12 noon Mandaue vs Ani-FCA 2 p.m. Treston Laguna vs Hobe Bihon-Taguig
Host Hobe Bihon-Taguig and Treston Laguna hurdled separate opponents yesterday at the start of the final leg of the Tournament of the Philippines at the Cong. Jun Duenas gym in Signal Village, Taguig City.
Taguig blew a 17-point lead but hung on to defeat stubborn Mandaue Cebu, 76-70, while the Stallions rallied from 16 points down in the third quarter to post a 92-85 overtime victory over Ani-FCA.
Both squads, aiming to claim a twice-to-beat advantage in the quarters, try to gain one step closer to the finals when they clash today.
The Landmasters gained a 68-66 with 1:59 on a triple by lefty point guard Ronald Bucao but Jeff Sanders tied the game with a putback. Then, a steal by Lou Gatumbato later led to a layup by big man Arden Guiyab putting the home squad up 70-68 with 1:14 to go.
After a defensive stop, Gatumbato iced the game by draining a three for a 73-68 lead, 21.7 ticks remaining.
"Luckily, we were able to make some big stops on the defensive stops down the stretch," said coach Bing Victoria.
Sanders and Ariel de Castro led Taguig with 12 points apiece while Harold Sta Cruz added seven points and 11 rebounds. Gatumbato finished with seven points, two rebounds and four assists.
Earlier, The Stallions leaned on guard Ricky Ricafuente and Marlon Legaspi in the fourth and overtime periods.
Ricafuente, who played for the Thailand Tigers in the ASEAN Basketball League, fired 31 points 12-of-23 shooting while adding six steals.
Legaspi, a former PBL Most Valuable Player, added 13 points and 13 rebounds in 25 minutes off the bench.
"We hope to gain momentum from this victory so that we can get that incentive in the quarterfinals," said coach Nomar Isla.
