The 6th staging of the Baden Powell Cup Basketball Tournament finally came to a close with the awarding ceremony successfully held last February 21 at the Chiang Kai Shek College Benjamin Chua, Jr. Gymnasium.

Leading the presentation of medal, trophies, and other prizes for the winning teams was Rosa Chan Yam, president of the Filipino-Chinese Scout Club. Also gracing the occasion were club vice-presidents Francisco Teng San, who is also vice-president of the Filipino-Chinese Amateur Athletic Federation (FCAAF), and Dr. Miguel T. Yu, former club presidents Po Sun To and Chua Keng Hua, deputy secretary-general Harry Young, and board member Wellie Eglorianin.

The 92-year old founder of the club, Professor Lim Giok Khun, delivered a message for the tournament participants as guest speaker of the occasion. Quoting him, “As the scars from the battles start healing, everyone must remember that, despite playing hard and tough against one another during the basketball games, we are all brothers in the spirit of Scouting.”

For the fourth consecutive year in a row, the Chiang Kai Shek College Blazing Scout Dragons took home the Baden Powell Cup by emerging champion in the 2009 tournament. The team members received specially-crafted medals courtesy of Marikina Congressman Del R. de Guzman and championship shirts from Hammerhead Jeans and Shirts. Medals and trophies were also presented to team members of St. Stephen’s High School (first runner-up), Quezon City Christian Academy (second runner-up), and Philippine Pasay Chung Hua Academy (third runner-up).

Unanimous choice as Most Valuable Player (MVP) of the tournament was CKSC’s 6’2” tower of power, Mark Lester D. Hung. He received a trophy and the Senator Richard Gordon, Jr. excellence award. Also receiving medals from the honourable Senator were the Mythical Five selection composed of Paul Steven C. Ngan (CKSC), Louie Jefferson Espejo (SSHS), John Kenneth P. Padilla (CKSC), Don Alvin Klinton Tan (QCCA), and Calvin Tyron Chan (PPCHA).

As a side event during the awarding ceremony, a dance competition was held among member schools of the Filipino-Chinese Scout Club. Philippine Cultural College and Manila Patriotic School shared joint championship honours with Chiang Kai Shek College emerging runner-up in this competition.

Other schools attending the annual gathering and closing rites were Philippine Academy of Sakya, Hope Christian High School, Philippine Buddhist Seng Guan Memorial Institute, Philadelphia High School, Northern Rizal Yorklin School, and Philippine Tiong Se Academy.

The tournament was successfully staged with the support of the Rotary Club of Bagumbayan Manila, Pro-Ad Marketing, E-Signal Trading Company, Hammerhead Jeans and Shirts, Accel Sports, and Burlington Socks.
