SECOND GAME

Halftime: 39-26
XAVIER SCHOOL

Jeron Teng – 17 points, five rebounds and seven assists
Harold Ng – 10 points, 2-for-4 from three-point area, five rebounds
and three assists
Caesar Wongchuking – nine points, 2-for-3 from three-point area,

Kurt Uy – five points
Derrence Lam – five points, three assists and seven turnovers
Jason Ligad – three points (1-of-5 FGA and 1-of-2 FTA)
NOTES: Kim Lo made a pair of free throws for the
game’s first points. After Jeron Teng tied the score at 2-all, Richard
Sy knocked in a triple for St. Jude for a 5-2 lead. Baskets by Donal
Ong and Jose Manuel gave Xavier the upperhand, 6-5, but Lo retaliated
for the Judenites’ final lead of the game, 7-6. Harold Ng struck
from underneath and Xavier went up, 8-7. After Jason Ligad split
his free throws for an 8-8 deadlock, the Golden Stallions zoomed
ahead for good with a 13-0 blast (three-point play by Teng, two
free throws by Bryan Tan, and a basket each by Ng, Manuel and Paolo
Cabero), 21-8, just seconds before the end of the first quarter,
which was 21-9 in Xavier’s favor. From thereon, the Judenites came
no closer than seven points (22-15, early in the second quarter)
for the rest of the game. Reed-thin Ligad was kept in check throughout
the game by the suffocating defense of Ong and Manuel and St. Jude’s
top scorer was shut out
offensively in the second half. Lo left the game midway through
the third period after an inadvertent elbow from teammate Richard
Sy bloodied his left eye. Xavier was ahead, 59-38, after three quarters
to virtually lock up the contest. Behind its second- and third-stringers,
the Gold and Blue continued to keep the pressure and led by at least
21 points (61-40) and as much as 39 (87-48) in the fourth period
even as St. Jude coach Goldwin Monteverde sat out his entire starting
unit. Freego Player of the Game – Jeron Teng, Xavier School. With
the victory over St. Jude, the Xavier Juniors extended their winning
streak in the Tiong Lian competitions to 16 games over three seasons.
Xavier is ranked No. 1 after the single round-robin elimination
phase. St. Jude is ranked No. 2 notwithstanding the results of its
final elimination-round game against winless Grace Christian College
on Saturday, January 30. Xavier and St. Jude have drawn quarterfinal
byes and are automatically seed into the semifinals (February 10)
armed with a twice-to-beat advantage against their opponents. |
