MCBL 2008 1st CONFERENCE
6 February 2008
Dear Sir or Madam,
We would like to invite your company
to join the 2008 1st conference of the MPG Corporate Basketball
League (MCBL). The tourney is open to all teams made up of employees
from the same corporation. Companies have the option to field in
more than one team for the 1st conference which is scheduled for
May to early July.
The MCBL was established in 2005 and
has held two conferences since 2006. For your reference, you can
log on to the MCBL website at www.gameface.ph/mcbl.php. You can
view the results and participants from previous tournaments by going
to the downloadables section and clicking on MCBL History and Records.
Teams will be grouped into divisions
based on relative strength, age, and/or location as determined by
the organizers in consultation with the teams. There is no limit
to the number of teams that can participate and the number of divisions
that can be formed. Essentially, we will be adapting the systems
that have proven successful in other basketball leagues that our
company has organized.
For more details on the MCBL 2008 1st
conference, please refer to the attached Basic Guidelines. Please
note that, we can arrange your schedule of games so as not to conflict
with any other tournaments your company’s team (s) may be participating
in. If you are interested to participate, please fill up the attached
registration form and fax to the indicated addressee on or before
Monday, March 31. All tournament fees must be settled on or before
Friday, April 25.

MCBL 2007
1st CONFERENCE
SEASON IN REVIEW: OLD FACES, NEW FACES
The 2007 1st conference of the MPG
Corporate Basketball League drew twelve teams grouped into two divisions.
Four teams, Chevron, Henkel, Pepsi, and Shopwise, made their MCBL
debuts. Three teams, Emerson, NU3 Foods, and 7-Eleven became the
only three teams to play in every MCBL tournament. Five teams that
have played at least in one MCBL tournament, Fuji Xerox, Nestle,
Petron, Shell, and Unilever, made up the rest of the field.
As in previous tournaments, there
continued to be a general parity among the teams as no team finished
the season undefeated. After the eliminations, 7-Eleven, NU3 Foods,
Petron, and Unilever finished as the top 4 teams in Division A.
For Division B, Fuji Xerox, Shopwise, Emerson, and Chevron came
out as the top 4 teams.
In the semis, 7-Eleven defeated Petron
while NU3 avenged it 2006 Finals loss, by defeating Petron in a
tightly fought contest. After splitting their regular season meetings
at 1 game apiece, Shopwise defeated Emerson to book its place in
the Division B Finals. 4th seeded Chevron, who only qualified in
the final day of eliminations, upset 1st seed Fuji Xerox in another
tight match.
The two championship finals were
classic matches.
The Division B final featured two
teams making their MCBL debuts. For most of the game, Shopwise held
Chevron at bay with its depth as it drew offensive and defensive
strength from a number of players led by Mythical Five members Lawrence
Soria and Gabriel Maranon. Led by Division MVP, Rainier Sison and
teammate Brian Infante, Chevron managed to stay within striking
distance throughout the game. As the game drew a close, Chevron
staged a furious rally in the dying minutes that brought them to
within 1 point of the championship with less than 10 seconds to
go. Predictably, the final play went to Rainier Sison, but his potential
game winning shot fell short and into the hands of the Shopwise
team as time expired.
While the Division B finals featured
two neophyte teams, the Division A Final was a clash between two
MCBL pioneers who have played in all MCBL tourneys since 2005. Both
teams were playing in their 3rd MCBL final. Like the Division B
final, one team held the other at bay for most of the game until
the latter put up a furious rally at the end.
Behind Division MVP Patrick Manayag,
who won his third MVP plum in a row, 7-Eleven led NU3 almost all
the way for four quarters. In the fourth, behind Roy Abapo and Jonathan
Demegillo, NU3 staged a furious rally as it drew even and went ahead
against 7-Eleven in the final minute of the game. 7-Eleven though
maintained their poise as they made their critical free throws in
the end game to send the match into OT. In the OT, 7-Eleven pulled
away as they won their 3rd straight MCBL title. |
